Why Bad Words?

I was involved in a conversation with a few people recently and someone mentioned that sometimes they say “bad” words or words that imitate those words out of habit. I started thinking about habits, and especially how it is a way that we are in slavery or bondage if they control us. We are to be in charge and responsible for our actions, and we actually choose our habits but what we allow. But just as a drug addict “chooses” to participate in the drugs, the habit “compels” them to do so and holds the person in bondage to it.

For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. (Romans 6:14)

Habits can be good or bad depending on the choices we have made. We can choose harmful habits like drugs, alcohol, smoking, junk food, cursing, etc. Or we can also choose helpful and healthy habits like eating good food, resting enough, exercising, and choosing our words in a positive way. When we begin a habit, it has very little power over us. But as we continue in it, it gains more and more power. If it is a negative habit then it is taking us where we do not want to go. It has control. If we choose a positive habit and then allow it to become ingrained in us, then it helps to take us where we want to go. Ultimately we are still in control and allow it to be a tool working for us. What habits have you allowed to control you? What habits could you replace them with that would be helpful to you?

Habits can be like waves in the ocean. Choose one that is going the direction you want to go, hop on and let it help carry you!

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4)
